More About Dr Nico Stevenson's Training and Philosophy
Training in General Surgery
"I spent six years in the Department of General Surgery at Tygerberg Academic Hospital, one year working as a Medical Officer and five years training to become a specialist General Surgeon.
I am extremely grateful for the training, mentorship and experience that I received during my time there and believe that it has given me the necessary tools to give my patients the treatment that they deserve. "
Patient Philosophy
"I believe in good communication with my patients, building a solid doctor-patient relationship and being empathetic towards my patients, in other words having a good bedside manner.
I understand that it is daunting just to have a consultation with a surgeon and even more so to undergo any kind of surgery, big or small. I try to relieve some of the anxiety associated with surgery by way of communication and by properly informing my patients about their disease process or the surgical procedure that they might have to undergo.
I try to eliminate any uncertainties they might have before they undergo a procedure."
Finding His Passion In General Surgery
"As a medical student I never thought of following a career in General Surgery and saw it as a physically and mentally taxing speciality. It was during my Internship and Community Service years at Rob Ferreira Hospital in the Lowveld where my appreciation for the surgical field first started.
During those years I grew in confidence and I learned a great deal about myself but also about the great responsibility that comes with looking after patients. During my time spent as a Medical Officer at Karl Bremer Hospital in Cape Town, I found the diversity and complexity of General Surgery intriguing and fascinating.
I admired the optimistic and resilient attitude of my then surgical mentors which I think are both necessary attributes for a General Surgeon."
